Welcome to my website my name is Alan Young. I live in East Yorkshire. When you look around my website you will soon see my main interests are photographing landscapes and people in a journalistic style. My photographs are pretty much all monochrome and occasionally duotone.

I am fortunate in my work that I get to travel to some really interesting locations especially China, which is my favourite destination. I love to photograph people in their working and living environments. I tend to steer away from the modern areas of towns and cities and focus on the more traditional places, avoiding modernity were possible.

I edit and process all my own photographs, converting to black and white using a process which is constantly evolving.  I enjoy experimenting with different conversion methods; however, the basics are usually the same. I use a combination of Lightroom and Photoshop and convert with various plug-ins. I often share my conversion processes and if you are curious drop me an email. It pays to be methodical when you are editing a picture. When editing, I always have a notepad by my side to document the steps I use during each stage of the process. This helps tremendously when you hit upon a technique that works and you need to reproduce the effect on other pictures within a series.

Colour management is very important in processing my photographs and I have spent many hours calibrating my monitor and printer to get the best results from my pictures. Consistency is the key and you need to establish the optimum settings for your workflow and stick to it.

I print all my favourite pictures at a size of A3+ and I like to stick to one photo paper, this helps with consistency and reduces disappointment and ink wastage. My current paper of choice is Ilford Gold Fibre Silk. 

Through my website one or two people have contacted me and asked to purchase prints, I am more than happy to provide this service. I do get pleasure from people who genuinely enjoy my photographs.

I have always used Canon cameras and currently use a 5D MKII and my lens of choice for most of my work is the 17-40/ F4.0L, the best lens I ever bought....so far.
